Description
An Online Video production looking back over the varied modes of transport from in and around the Hampshire city of Portsmouth. Start with a look at the tramway system which started by horse propulsion in 1865 between the railway station and Clarence Pier with the electrification programme beginning in 1901. Featured are the varied trams from the beginning and new introductions including works cars for Portsmouth Corporation. Another feature is of the nearby Provincial Tramway as well as Gosport and Fareham Tramway. Next are scenes dating from the 1930’s of bus operation in the area with Southdown Motor Bus Services followed by first of the trolleybus fleet to be introduced coinciding with last days of tramway operation in Southsea in 1936. Then a look at the railway system in 1936 with introduction of new electric services and steam working in Fratton Yard. We also see the coronation specials of 1937. Trolleybus expansion of 1950’s are featured. Another feature is the story of Portsmouth Corporation Buses with their fleet details ranging from 1919 to 1957 plus the provincial services of the 1950’s. Portsmouth’s paddle steamer operation to and from Isle of Wight is also included. Other features in the DVD includes 10 ¼ Inch Gauge Southsea Miniature Railway. A return is made back to the trolleybus system with withdrawals beginning in 1960 through to 1963 including last days of service. Final part of the DVD shows post withdrawal scenes such as trolleybuses awaiting scrap.
