The Avontuur Railway

Published by Mainline and Maritime in 2020 this book written by Richard Hay is one in a series looking at South African 2 Foot Gauge Railways. This title The Avontuur Railway is a softback book of 66 pages with many color photographs of the route between Port Elizabeth and Avontuur covering the period between 1969 and 2010. Throughout the book the railway and the scenery in which it passes through are visualized by use of photographs to a great extent. The book begins at Port Elizabeth and the harbour before going along the line to Chelsea and a look at Eastern Province Cement Company Branch. Following this the railway journey is photographed and shown to Gamtoos Junction, Patensie, Assegaaibos, and finally on to the end of the line at Avontuur. Photographs contained in the book show a great variety of locomotives operating over the route as well as many spectacular views of the scenery. This book certainly provides a great glimpse into the fascinating 2 foot gage railway of South Africa
