Description
An A and J Video production in co-operation with online video to commemorate the end of slam door electrics operating on the Southern Region in 2005 with footage recorded in and around London over a period of twenty-five years between 1979 and 2004. This DVD tells the story of the various designs of slam door stock including BEPs, CEPs, CIGs, EPBs, and VEPs as well as class 73 electro-diesel locomotives working Gatwick Expresses. Also glimpses of the new electric multiple units that are being introduced to replace the aging slam door stock. By the end of 2005 all slam door stock trains had been withdrawn, we see them taken over by their modern counterparts, such as the class 375, 377, 444, 450, 460, and the class 458 itself not expected to last long on Southern metals. We see the last remaining CEPs, CIGs, and VEPs running. Also seen are the last few remaining class 73s on the Gatwick Express out of Victoria Station. With the privatization of the railways in the 1990s, private companies such as Connex, Stagecoach, and Govia added a splash of color to their trains. We pay a visit to the Cannon Street Exhibition where the preserved 2BIL and 4SUB are seen running the shuttle service to and from London Bridge. Scenes include 4LAVs at Clapham Junction. EPBs at Holbourn Viaduct. Snow Hill tunnels before they were taken over by Thameslink, for their cross-London rail link from Brighton, Sutton, Bedford, and Luton.
