Description
Cliff Lifts began in 1875 at Scarborough and soon became a site in a seaside town, some places had more than one for example Hastings had 2, and Folkestone and Scarborough both had 4. It is a means of transport to enable people to get up and down cliff tops and the beach first worked by water pump and then by electricity. This DVD visits cliff lifts all over the country places like Folkestone, Scarborough, Lynmouth, Lynton, Aberystwyth, Margate, and Bournemouth to name a few. Folkestone has only one surviving cliff lift, Lynton still has its cliff lift which is now grade 2 listed whilst Margate closed in 1970. Also seen are the operators' working area and Clifton Rocks which although closed in 1934 the cables and tracks are still in position. It was also used during the war by BBC for broadcasting. The DVD which runs for just under an hour and a half has many historical scenes of the many cliff lifts in Great Britain. Throughout, the various cliff lifts that are featured are described in as much detail as possible including its rich history.
