Folkestone Cliff Lifts

Folkestone was once the home of 4 cliff lifts although now it only has one which is over 125 years old. Folkestone was the first to have a cliff lift on the south coast seaside and the one remaining is the second oldest water pump lift surviving in England. Its track gauge is 5 foot 10 inches and 164 foot travelling distance carrying 15 people. Footage shown includes a view as early as 1888 as well as film from the 1960's. History is discovered on the Leas Cliff of all 4 lifts and the area's they worked. Due to declining passengers lift cars were reduced in 1967 and only 1 car survived to be restored. Folkestone still has a lift car in operation today running daily during summer. There is beautiful views as the car travels down the cliff top to the beach.
